The NZIOB is a professional association. It therefore sets membership standards, which are appropriate for professionals. A ‘building professional’ is defined as an ethical person who has appropriate qualifications and whose work contributes to the development of the built environment and which entails the exercise of judgement and relevant expertise. This definition shows that the institute is broad and the members may be involved with any of the wide range of specialisations relating to the building industry.
For membership of the NZ Institute of Building to have any standing one of the requirements must be that membership is a distinction gained by successfully meeting a high standard of selection criteria.
For that reason the Institute has set down the criteria which must be met if an applicant is to be admitted to the various grades of membership and requires every applicant to be fairly and impartially measured against these. For the same reason it is incumbent upon all applicants to present their cases as fully and fairly as possible in their proposal forms. The Institute expects that applicants will take as much care in completing their proposal form as they would in applying for a highly sought position.
The Institute of Building insists on full and complete proposals in order to be able to process proposals expeditiously and fairly. The purpose of this publication is to explain the NZIOB’s membership structure and to guide applicants in applying for admission.
Like all industry trade associations, members join the NZIOB for various reasons but in our case these can be categorised under three headings, the basis of which are formed from our objectives as follows:
Professional people have a vital interest in promoting their ethics and standards. That is a very difficult thing for an individual to do and members therefore rely on the Institute to speak on their behalf. To that end the Institute is an effective lobby group, recognised at the highest levels and active on such matters as:
This list is hardly exhaustive but gives an indication of our involvement.
We are, or have recently been represented on such bodies as the Construction Industry Council and in the Department of Building and Housing; particularly discussions on the licensing of building practitioners, to ensure we are recognised, particularly at site and project management level when licensing is finally in place.
On behalf of members, the NZIOB regularly submits to Bills before Parliament and to changes in building regulations.
The NZIOB Awards for Excellence in the Building Professions are held annually and recognise individual or team effort in the construction process. They are at the forefront of a number of industry awards.
Careers Days are held annually in 2 Chapters (in conjunction with the Coca Cola Careers days) to promote careers in the construction industry.
Registered Construction Manager (RCM) is an NZIOB initiative which recognises skill, knowledge and ability at the very highest level of the construction industry. RCM status is conferred by the RCM Board only after a rigorous interview process on the applicant’s work history.
An alliance with the Australian Institute Of Building is currently in force which has many advantages for both parties. The Alliance, as one of its provisions, gives those members who travel across the Tasman the ability to join the sister Institute at a reduced rate for a maximum two year period. The AIB and NZIOB share similar objectives.
The NZIOB is represented at industry events such as BuildNZ and enjoys close cooperation with tertiary institutions and other industry associations such as NZIA, NZIQS, RMBF and NZCBA.
All members receive a free copy of each edition of Progressive Building, the official NZIOB magazine, published 6 times annually. They also receive a free copy of Building Networks, the in-house newsletter which provides an update on Institute matters.
All 3 Chapters, in Auckland (with sub-chapters in Northland and Waikato), Wellington and Christchurch provide a range of local activities, presentations and site visits throughout the year to keep members abreast of the latest industry developments. Additionally, regular networking functions are held and include such things as sponsored breakfasts, AGM Dinners and Chapter Golf Tournaments.
The National Council of the Institute has appointed a student sub-committee with representatives from all three chapters and as a result of that committee’s recommendations, all Chapter Boards have student-specific activities such as site visits etc throughout the year.
Student membership of the Institute is free for the first year or part thereof.
The NZIOB has FREE membership for the first year joining as a student. After the first year, a fee of $15.00 plus GST is charged. Within most construction companies, this fee is often refunded as part of your employment. Membership with the NZIOB is about the individual seeking professional recognition and being able to take that to other organisations.
The NZIOB provides scholarships and awards each year as part of our contribution to developing careers in the building industry. These awards go to the outstanding academic achievers of their year in the construction subjects. To be given one of these awards means a foot into any construction company in New Zealand.
We have several events over the course of the year which you are welcome to come along to. These events often cost nothing to attend and provide good information and a chance to meet your peers in the industry. These events are posted on our website and are emailed through to you. We also combine with the other institutes to have joint events which you can attend as a member of the NZIOB for free. This gives you a broader range of options for continuing your professional development.
You will receive a free copy of our magazine, Progressive Building every second month. On a quarterly basis you will receive an email "Building Networks", the official NZIOB newsletter. Make sure that your details are up-to-date with us to ensure that they arrive regularly.
We have a sub-committee which represents all student matters at Council. Generally within your company, we have a delegate that also provides you with information or assistance. This is a senior member of the Institute. To check on who that might be within your company, please contact our administration person on brigitte@nziob.org.nz
All Chapters have Student Awards whereby we celebrate those who have excelled in the academic year.
