What's going on at Southern Chapter?

Southern 2010 AGM Breakfast & Presentation

The Southern Chapter called a breakfast meeting at The Holiday Inn on Avon for our 2010 AGM (25 May). This was well supported by local members, with an invitation extended to the local NZIQS members who joined us for breakfast and the presentation. Our outgoing President, Samir Govind chaired our AGM, presented the Presidents report and Andrew Marshall gave an overview of the Southern Chapter's Education Trust and activities. The chair was handed over to Adrian Jonkers our incoming President.

Our special guest speaker Greg Rozen presented the Christchurch City Council's proposed new Christchurch Botanic Garden Centre and explained the Central City South Master Plan. Judging by the positive responses, questions and feedback, this was another very valued and successful event on our annual calendar.

Southern Chapter Site Visit

Southern Chapter Members were treated to a site visit and two presentations, at Fletchers Southern Cross Hospital site 4 May.

Mark Raynes-Greenow of Fletcher Construction, was the recipient of the NZIOB Southern Chapter Education Fund Outward Bound leadership scholarship. Mark shared his experiences, how he saw its application to the construction industry and personal benefits from having taken up this scholarship. Mark is also on the Fletcher Southern Cross team.

Gary Haverland is a Director of Structex and recently completed the design of the South Islands first PRESSS building for Southern Cross Hospitals in Christchurch, now under construction. In principle this structural design will better accommodate systemic movement during an earthquake, thereby reducing the risk of damage to delicate surgical instruments and equipment. The evening was enjoyed by all who attended.

Southern Chapter Lawn Bowls Tournament 12 March 2010

A cold wet southerly required plan 'B' to be implemented as the soaked greens prevented play. In spite of the weather we had an almost full turnout come along for a fun event. Retaining our teams, euka became the challenge of the day. For the non card players they made the best of it, for those skilled players, a test of patience and opportunity. Even with the changed activities, the competition remained lighthearted as the teams circulated gathering their results to identify a winning team and a final playoff was required.

While being fed and watered there was ample opportunity to circulate and catch up with colleagues and put the industry right. As previously this tournament attracts excellent sponsorship. Everyone went away with very good prizes regardless of their card playing abilities and will be noting this event for next year's calendar.

The Southern Chapter acknowledges the generosity of our main sponsors Gib, PlaceMakers, E2 Flashing Solutions and BGC Fibre Cement. We also enjoyed the continued support of Protector Safety and Ramset assisting with prizes.

Warren Lewis, well known Christchurch consulting engineer will present his experiences assessing the damaged to buildings and the earthquakes impact on local communities following the severe earthquakes experienced in October this year.
The visit was done in connection with the New Zealand Governments contribution to aid and also as a fact finding exercise to better understand the impact of earthquakes on low to medium rise builders.
He is returning in January to review the reconstruction work and also to assess other damaged buildings.
The findings from these visits is very beneficial to New Zealand’s research into seismic strengthening of existing and new buildings.
