Central Chapter - Quiz & Dinner  17th June 2010

The Central Chapter Mid-Winter Dinner and “The Great General Knowledge Quiz” was recently held on the 17th June at The PINES Houghton Bay. With nearly 100 participants, the event organised and hosted by Board Member (and now much sought after Quiz Master) “Jim Bowler” was a great success!

The night was filled with much merriment and laughter as all enjoyed some challenging questions.  Special thanks to Roger Shelton of BRANZ who maintained the electronic score board!

The following sponsors who contributed with prizes for the night are to be thanked for their generosity:

Bunnings - Lyall Bay
Placemakers - Palmerston North
Mainzeal
Fletcher Construction
Rockcote
McMillan & Lockwood
L.T. McGuinness (student table sponsor)

Central Chapter debate held on Tuesday 14th of July - School of Architecture

Motion:

“That Wellington City Council earthquake strengthening policy is working.”

The 104 people who braved the near freezing conditions to attend this debate were educated by experts in matters of; engineering, land use, architecture, historic buildings, the law and its shortfalls, responsibilities of a council, body corporate’s, property values, risk management, physiological impacts, psychological distress symptoms, discussions with young daughters and the disruptions to ones love life!

The topical matter being debated had the occasional lapses into frivolity which was well received together with kisses in the form of bribes notably induced by Arthur Park and to keep the record straight it was Alison Pharaoh that did the kissing. This point was not missed by the adjudicator Neil Miller who obviously felt deprived!

In spite of all the fun the underlying seriousness did not go amiss with serious concerns being expressed by both commercial and apartment owners alike.

The intent of the by-law is fine but where does the money come from to full fill the intent? It was mooted that government should provide special tax breaks for those building owners who undertook re-strengthening.

One thing that can not be denied is the fact that millions and millions of dollars are in limbo for re-strengthening as a result of the Wellington City Council by-law for the construction industry.

Chairperson & timekeeper:
Dr Gregory Chawynski (NZIOB Central Chapter President) General Manager, McMillan & Lockwood

Adjudicator:
Neil Miller

The affirmative team:
Dr. Arthur Park, Clendon Burns & Park Consulting Engineers Steve Cody, Manager Building Compliance
Wgtn City Council, Ian Athfield, Athfield Architects
The negative team:
Adam Thornton, Dunning Thornton
Consulting Engineers, Jaesen Sumner, Ford Sumner Lawyers, Alison Pharaoh, Livingstones Property Management & Consultancy

The adjudicator found for the negative team!

Left to right:
Neil Miller, Steve Cody, Ian Athfield. Arthur Park, Alison Pharaoh, Jaesen Sumner,
Adam Thornton, Greg Chawynski, Mike King.

Sponsors for the event were:

Ford Sumner Lawyers and Fletcher Construction
